Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) Director General, Musayeroh Barrie delivered a compelling presentation at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Western and Central Africa Office (WACAF) meeting held in Dakar, Senegal, on January 24, 2024. During her address, she underscored the ambitious vision of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA), highlighting key objectives and areas of focus.
Barrie articulated that the SLCAA’s vision extended beyond merely being a participant in the African aviation sector. Instead, the authority aspired to become a strategic leader, contributing significantly to the region’s air transportation landscape. A pivotal aspect of this vision was the revival of domestic flights within Sierra Leone, aiming to stimulate increased aviation activity and foster a conducive environment for airlines to thrive.
The Director General emphasized the importance of encouraging both national and regional flights, promoting connectivity within Sierra Leone and with neighboring countries. To achieve these goals, she outlined specific initiatives, including a focus on flight procedure design and its implementation. Additionally, Barrie expressed the SLCAA’s commitment to providing support to the Flight Information Region (FIR) on AIM (Aeronautical Information Management) results-based implementation system projects.
In line with international standards, the SLCAA aimed to establish an ICAO-certified training school within Sierra Leone. This initiative aimed to enhance the skills and capabilities of aviation professionals, ensuring compliance with global best practices. Barrie stressed the significance of developing a civil aviation master plan as a strategic guide for the long-term growth and sustainability of the aviation sector in Sierra Leone.
Another critical objective outlined by the SLCAA Director General was the removal of Sierra Leone from the European Union (EU) safety list. This move would signify the nation’s commitment to meeting and exceeding international safety standards, enhancing its reputation in the global aviation community.
Barrie also highlighted the importance of the ICAO AVSEC (Aviation Security) Instructors course as a key area of interest for the SLCAA. Strengthening aviation security measures is crucial for ensuring the safety and confidence of passengers and industry stakeholders.
Musayeroh Barrie’s presentation at the ICAO WACAF meeting showcased the SLCAA’s proactive approach to transforming Sierra Leone into a prominent player in the African aviation industry. The outlined objectives and initiatives reflect a commitment to excellence, safety, and growth in the country’s civil aviation sector. As Sierra Leone works towards these goals, it positions itself as a beacon of progress and opportunity in the dynamic field of aviation in Western and Central Africa.
