The Sierra Leone Maritime Administration (SLMA) has joined the global maritime community in celebrating World Maritime Day 2025 under the theme, “Our Ocean, Our Obligations, Our Opportunities.”
During the event, stakeholders highlighted the importance of environmental protection, sustainable use of marine resources, investment in maritime training, and international cooperation.
Mr. Roland N. Moore, SLMA’s Director of Shipping and Environment, emphasized the need to tackle marine pollution, particularly from plastics, noting that global trade depends on a healthy ocean. He called for collective action to safeguard maritime ecosystems.
Dr. Daniel Kaitibi, Executive Director of SLMA, reaffirmed the Administration’s commitment to ratifying and domesticating international maritime conventions to strengthen Sierra Leone’s engagement in the global marine sector. He also acknowledged SLMA’s growing international prominence and pledged continued support for the blue economy.
Hon. Bintu Myers, Chairperson of the SLMA Board, stressed the nation’s responsibility to protect the ocean and prevent overexploitation of fisheries and other marine resources. She reassured staff of the Board’s support in addressing capacity gaps and emphasized the government’s commitment to developing the maritime industry under President Julius Maada Bio.
Acting Minister of Transport and Aviation, Mr. Rex Bonafa, described the theme as a call to action, highlighting the ocean’s crucial role in livelihoods, connectivity, and trade.
He also pledged support for SLMA’s plans to establish a modern marine Training Academy to equip young Sierra Leoneans with globally competitive maritime skills.
