The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has assured the public that the nation’s security situation remains calm and stable, while emphasizing that security is inherently unpredictable and requires sustained vigilance from both law enforcement and citizens.

The assurance was given by the Director of Operations and Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Police, Dr. John Martin Senesie, during the SLP’s weekly press conference in Freetown. He stated that the police continue to maintain a proactive, intelligence-led security posture across the country to prevent and respond swiftly to any emerging threats.

AIG Senesie disclosed that the SLP, in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA), is conducting joint operations within the Freetown Municipality to remove abandoned vehicles and dismantle illegal roadside structures. He explained that these exercises aim to ease traffic congestion, reduce road hazards, and enhance public safety.

Highlighting the SLP’s participation in national events, AIG Senesie noted the National Remembrance Day commemoration held on 20 January 2026 at the Sierra Leone Peacekeeping and Law Enforcement Academy (SILEA), where fallen officers were honoured with prayers and tributes for their ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.

Addressing a tragic development, AIG Senesie confirmed a fatal road accident along the Masiaka–Mile 91 Highway, which claimed the lives of three police personnel and left several others injured. He added that the Head of the Operational Support Division (OSD), Commissioner Mohamed Samai, who was involved in the accident, is recovering positively under medical care.

The briefing also included provincial security updates from Kenema and Bo Districts, highlighting key local security developments and ongoing policing efforts to maintain law and order.

Additionally, the Head of the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU), Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Rev. Michael Laggah, briefed journalists on ongoing investigations, presenting apprehended suspects and recovered exhibits to demonstrate the SLP’s sustained efforts against organized and transnational crime.

Concluding the press conference, the Head of Media and Public Relations, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Brima Kamara (Esq.), provided a comprehensive summary of nationwide enforcement operations conducted over the past two weeks.

The Sierra Leone Police reaffirmed their commitment to public safety, professionalism, accountability, and transparency, while urging the public to remain law-abiding and supportive of ongoing security efforts across the country.
