The Acting Public Relations Officer of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Parliamentary Caucus, Hon. Quintin Salia-Konneh, has disputed the All-People’s Congress (APC) Party’s assertion that Sierra Leoneans have overwhelmingly rejected the Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system.
Speaking on the matter, Hon. Salia-Konneh argued that the consultations held so far on the country’s preferred electoral system do not comprehensively capture the views of the entire population. He suggested that drawing a definitive conclusion from the current level of engagement would be premature.
His comments come in response to recent statements from the APC, which claim that the consultation process demonstrates public opposition to PR and reflects a preference for returning to a constituency-based system.
Hon. Salia-Konneh also expressed skepticism about the APC’s stated confidence in winning the next general elections, describing it as political optimism rather than a certainty.
The debate over Sierra Leone’s electoral framework remains ongoing, with political parties, civil society, and electoral authorities yet to reach a unified position.
