The Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) in a a press release dated 29th, July 2024, informed the public about a slope failure incident that occurred along the Wellington-Masiaka Highway at One Pole, Allen Town.

The statement disclosed that a joint inspection was made by SLRA and the China Railway Seventh Group (CRSG) and revealed that the slope failure was caused by unauthorized excavation at the verge of the road.

The statement also confirmed that at least one of the individuals involved in the destructive act has been arrested and is currently assisting the police with investigations.

The authority is collaborating with CRSG to immediately address the situation and remedy the affected section of the highway.

As a way to facilitate the emergency intervention, a section of the Right-Hand-Side of the road (from Orogu Bridge towards Furniture Junction) has been temporarily closed to traffic.

The general public is encourage to obey the one-side traffic regulations and use the Grafton-Furniture Road (the Old Road) to ease congestion on the Orogu Bridge-Furniture Road during peak hours.

“We sincerely regret any inconvenience caused to the general public,” the statement reads, signed by the SLRA management.

The incident highlights the importance of maintaining the integrity of the country’s road infrastructure, which is critical for the smooth flow of transportation and economic activities. The SLRA’s swift response and collaboration with CRSG demonstrate their commitment to addressing the issue and ensuring the safety of commuters.

As the investigation continues, the Sierra Leone Roads Authority has urged the public to cooperate with the authorities and follow. the temporary traffic diversions to minimize the impact on their daily commute.
