The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) has commenced the demolition of kiosks and other business structures at the Model New Road Junction as part of its initiative to enhance road safety for pedestrians, and curtail road traffic.

Report confirmed that those structures have obstructed pedestrian pathways, creating potential hazards for road users. The demolition is also intended to provide a clearer view of the road for both drivers and pedestrians, thereby reducing the risk of accidents.

Despite the early warning, which was put out by the authorities for the business people to evacuate the those areas, the business owners reportedly undermined the notice, with the hope of getting into a friendly resolution.

While the operation aims to improve safety, it has raised concerns among local business owners who rely on these kiosks for their livelihoods. Despite this, SLRSA representatives emphasized the necessity of prioritizing public safety over commercial interests.

The authority has expressed commitment to ensuring that roadways are safe and accessible for all citizens. The demolition effort is part of a broader strategy to address safety challenges in urban areas across Sierra Leone.
