The former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Michael Ambrose Sovula, was sacked from office by President Bio in July 2022. Although it was not made clear, there were speculations that he was sacked for importing illicit drugs.

There has been speculation of human rights abuses, extrajudicial killing, arbitrary arrest and detaining of the non-SLPP supporters and sympathizers in the Northern Province and Western Areas under his watch; his sack was met with joy.

The Former IGP was also regarded as tribalistic and partisan and human rights violations across Sierra Leone.
