Statistics Sierra Leone has stepped up its nationwide public engagement campaign ahead of the 2026 Population and Housing Census, hosting a Civic Town Hall Meeting in Kamakwie aimed at promoting inclusivity and citizen participation in the exercise.
The meeting, held at the Karene District Council Hall, was organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Civic Education and brought together a wide cross-section of stakeholders from across the district.
Participants included representatives from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), Paramount and Regent Chiefs, Chiefdom Speakers, members of the security sector, the Chief Administrator of the Karene District Council, councilors, media practitioners, school pupils, university students, civil society organizations, market women, and other residents.
Speaking on behalf of the Statistician-General, the Director of Communication and Public Relations at Statistics Sierra Leone, Samuel Ansumana, provided detailed insights into the upcoming census process. He emphasized the importance of the census in national planning, resource allocation, and evidence-based decision-making.
Ansumana called for active citizen participation, stressing that the success of the census depends on the willingness of residents to be counted. He also reassured attendees of the confidentiality and integrity of the data collection process, noting that personal information provided during the census would be securely handled.
The town hall created an interactive platform for dialogue, allowing residents to raise questions, share concerns, and gain clarity on various aspects of the census exercise. The engagement reflects Statistics Sierra Leone’s commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and fostering community ownership of the national data collection process.
The Kamakwie meeting forms part of a broader nationwide awareness campaign being undertaken by Statistics Sierra Leone to mobilize citizens and strengthen public trust ahead of the 2026 Census.
Statistics Sierra Leone reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a credible, accurate, and inclusive census that reflects the true demographic profile of the country.
The campaign continues under the slogan: “Census 2026: Leh Den Kont U Oh!”
