The National Revenue Authority (NRA) on May 7, 2025, at the Lungi Airport facilitated safe Passage for Stranded Passengers who were going to Monrovia.
The Jendema Customs Office intervened in the challenging situation at the Lungi Airport Hotel, where passengers were stranded after their SN Brussels Airlines flight to Monrovia was delayed due to technical issues.
Initially expecting to be transferred to Monrovia on an incoming flight, passengers faced frustration when the flight was fully booked, leading to a near-riot. In response, the Lungi Airport Hotel Management, together with SN Brussels, agreed to move the passengers by road to Liberia.
However, an appeal was made to the NRA through the Manager at Jendema Customs Post Manager, Mr. Mujiru I.I. Kallon, and other border agencies to help facilitate the cross-border movement of the stranded passengers.
Furthermore, this decision sparked significant collaboration between the private sector and government agencies, as well as between Sierra Leone and Liberia. Upon notification from the Lungi Airport Hotel, officials coordinated with the Liberian Immigration Services and various security agencies to facilitate the safe passage of the passengers.
The urgency of the situation was heightened by the official closing hours of the border, which is 6:00 PM, requiring meticulous planning and cooperation from both sides to ensure a smooth operation.
A total of 50 passengers were transported in three buses, departing at staggered intervals. The first bus arrived at the border at 9:30 PM, followed by the second at 11:45 PM, and the last at 2:55 AM the next day.
Each group was processed efficiently, showcasing the effective collaboration between Sierra Leonean and Liberian authorities.
This successful operation not only ensured the passengers’ safe journey but also highlighted the importance of intergovernmental cooperation and public-private partnerships in crisis management.
