The Support, Comprehensive Care and Empowerment for People with Psychosocial Disabilities in Sierra Leone (SUCCEED Sierra Leone) has successfully concluded an intensive academic writing and research support workshop at the University of Makeni’s Fatima Campus.

The training was hosted in the institution’s Virtual Classroom and targeted university staff with the goal of strengthening their academic writing and research skills.

Held from September 10th to 12th, 2025, the three-day sessions were led by Dr. Ritsuko Kakuma, Associate Professor from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), alongside SUCCEED Sierra Leone’s Program Manager, Veronica Kamara, and Research Coordinator, Amjata Bayoh.

Participants engaged in interactive discussions and practical exercises covering key aspects of academic writing, including structuring research papers, developing arguments, and maintaining ethical research practices.

A major highlight was the independent writing session, where participants received personalized feedback and shared experiences about the challenges and opportunities in the research process. The collaborative approach fostered knowledge exchange and encouraged best practices among staff.

Speaking at the close of the workshop, SUCCEED Sierra Leone’s Research Coordinator, Amjata Bayoh, described the training as transformative, stressing its importance in enhancing staff capacity to communicate research effectively. Peer Researcher, Esther Moses Kamara, also expressed appreciation to Dr. Kakuma and the LSHTM team for their guidance and support.

The initiative forms part of SUCCEED AFRICA’s broader commitment to building research capacity and empowering academic staff across Sierra Leone.
