With rising tensions and misinformation surrounding the forthcoming Motor Drivers’ Union elections, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, the Minister of Employment, Labour, and Social Security, has intervened to ensure a peaceful and fair election process.
Minister Swaray met separately with both the current and aspiring Union presidents to address the conflicts jeopardizing the election’s integrity.
Minister Swaray emphasized his dedication to an inclusive election where all participants can trust its fairness and transparency. “We want to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election,” he reassured both groups during their discussions. He urged them to prioritize peace and maintain it throughout the election period.
In light of the ongoing disputes and the tense atmosphere, Minister Swaray ordered a postponement of the elections. He recommended this delay to provide time for resolving conflicts and establishing a clear and agreed-upon election roadmap. “The peace and stability of your Union should be very important to you, as it is to the Government,” he emphasized, underscoring the need for unity within the Union.
The decision to delay the election highlights the significant disagreements within the Union, especially among the competing factions. As the Motor Drivers’ Union plans to hold its election later this month, Minister Swaray’s intervention aims to facilitate a more harmonious, transparent, and unified election process. His efforts are intended to ensure that all members feel their voices are heard and respected.
