Sierra Leone’s Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Hon. Mohamed Rahman Swaray, has held a high-level bilateral meeting with the Director-General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) on the sidelines of the 114th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland.
The meeting, which took place on June 12, 2026, focused on strengthening cooperation between Sierra Leone and the ILO in advancing labour reforms and promoting decent work.
During the engagement, Minister Swaray expressed appreciation to the ILO for inviting Sierra Leone to participate in the global conference. He also congratulated the organisation on the successful adoption of key international frameworks, including: The Convention on Decent Work in the Platform Economy and The Transformative Agenda for Gender Equality at Work instrument.

These instruments are expected to shape global labour standards, particularly in emerging sectors and gender inclusion.
The Minister used the opportunity to brief the ILO leadership on recent developments in Sierra Leone’s labour sector, including the successful hosting of the Second National Labour Conference and Social Dialogue Forum in Freetown
The events brought together government officials, employers, workers, and other stakeholders to strengthen labour relations and inclusive dialogue.
He also highlighted progress made by the Ministry in ratifying key ILO conventions, reviewing and updating labour laws, promoting decent work standards and strengthening tripartite engagement among stakeholders
As part of ongoing collaboration, the Sierra Leone delegation requested ILO support in key areas, such as conducting a national Labour Force Survey and providing technical assistance to institutionalize the National Social Dialogue Forum as a sustainable platform
These initiatives are seen as critical to improving labour market data and fostering long-term engagement between social partners.
Both Sierra Leone and the ILO reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting Decent work opportunities, Inclusive economic growth and Social justice and labour rights
The meeting underscores Sierra Leone’s continued engagement with international partners to strengthen its labour sector and align with global best practices
