The National Revenue Authority (NRA) of Sierra Leone has underscored the critical importance of tax education in promoting efficient revenue administration and compliance among government institutions.
In a recent engagement with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) as well as State Owned Enterprises (SOEs), the NRA emphasized the legal and civic obligation these entities have to adhere to tax laws.
Acting Commissioner General Mrs. Ann Marie Baby Harding opened the session by expressing gratitude to the representatives from MDAs and SOEs for their participation. She highlighted the importance of collaboration and regular engagement to enhance compliance with tax regulations.
Moo-usa Salia Konneh, Assistant Commissioner of the Large Taxpayers Office at the Domestic Tax Department, addressed some challenges faced by MDAs and SOEs in filing and payment, noting their crucial role in the government’s revenue mobilization efforts. He stressed that the primary objective of the engagement was to guide these entities towards better compliance, stating, “The government needs money.”
James Bobor Tengbeh, Commissioner of the Domestic Tax Department, reinforced the significance of tax education in improving compliance rates. He urged MDAs and SOEs to fulfill their tax obligations, emphasizing that non-compliance could lead to enforcement actions, including penalties and operational shutdowns. “This engagement will be beneficial and will assist MDAs and SOEs in meeting their tax responsibilities,” Tengbeh concluded.
During the session, Mr. Samuel Fullah, Manager of the Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS), presented on various topics related to tax obligations, including Tax Identification Numbers (TIN), tax type registration, filing of returns, and amendments in the Finance Act 2025. His presentation was well-received, addressing numerous queries and concerns raised by attendees.
