Professor Aliyageen M. Alghali has resigned as Chairman of the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), citing persistent allegations, media attacks, and what he describes as systematic interference by the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE).

In his resignation letter dated July 10, 2025, addressed to the Secretary to the President, Professor Alghali said the constant press releases and media coverage made it impossible for him to continue.

He also cited his referral to the Anti-Corruption Commission over allegations of “double dipping,” as well as disputes over signatory status on commission bank accounts and vehicle allocation.

Professor Alghali accused the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education of undermining the Commission’s independence by taking on its mandate without consultation.

“The ministry’s undue interference had compromised the independence and authority of the Commission, leaving me with no option but to resign,” he said in his statement.

The former chairman said two internal inquiries found evidence of gross misconduct by staff at the Secretariat. The findings included:

  • Public demonstrations involving placards and media coverage;
  • Circumvention of established grievance procedures;
  • Denial of access to offices.

According to Professor Alghali, the findings contravened the Public Service Regulations, 1982 (revised 2025), the Public Service Codes and Rules, and other applicable laws.

Despite these findings, he said disciplinary measures were not observed and staff were reinstated without individual apologies or sanctions.

Professor Alghali stated that he served “diligently and in good faith” and sought to contribute to a more effective Commission through sound governance, institutional accreditation, and promoting a transparent public image.

His resignation took effect following his letter to the Secretary to the President.
