Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has firmly reiterated his stance against seeking a third term in office, stating he has no intention of extending his presidency or pursuing a seven-year term.

The clarification came amid growing speculations regarding a possible extension of his time in office.

In a recent address, President Bio emphasized his primary goal before leaving the presidency, stating the establishment of laws that will fortify the democratic future of Sierra Leone. His commitment was backed by Attorney General and Minister of Justice Alpha Sesay, who provided updates to stakeholders on the status of the constitutional review process during the same meeting.

“The process is not merely a revision of legal documentation but a transformative journey aimed at reshaping the future of Sierra Leone,” said President Bio, highlighting the significant historical context of the ongoing Constitutional Review Process that has involved collective efforts over nearly two decades.

The President emphasized the necessity of ensuring inclusivity and responsiveness to the changing needs of society. He stated that it is essential for the Constitution to dynamically reflect the nation’s values and aspirations.

Reflecting on the evolution of Sierra Leone since the adoption of the current Constitution, President Bio acknowledged the imperfections that exist within any legal document, along with the constant changes in societal needs that necessitate a comprehensive review.

His comments reiterated a promise he made during his candidacy for the presidency in 2018 regarding the completion of the Constitutional Review Process. The initiative stems from the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), which was established in the aftermath of the country’s civil war. President Bio reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fulfilling that significant mandate.
