In an effort to mitigate the impact of Sargassum seaweed and restore the scenic beauty of Lumley-Aberdeen Beach, the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the National Tourist Board (NTB) and key partners, embarked on a beach clean-up initiative on Friday.
The exercise focused on removing debris and waste along the popular coastal stretch in Freetown.
Tourism Minister Nabeela Farida Tunis, Permanent Secretary Edward Kwame Yankson, NTB General Manager Fatmata Hamid Carew, and staff from both the Ministry and NTB were present, leading the charge in the debris removal. The clean-up is part of ongoing efforts to address the growing seaweed issue that continues to affect the beach’s environment.
“The presence of seaweed and waste is impacting one of our prime tourist sites. We are calling on more partners to join us in finding a sustainable solution,” Minister Tunis said, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the beach’s appeal for both locals and tourists.
The Ministry is urging greater involvement from stakeholders to not only address the immediate issue but also to develop long-term strategies for preventing future accumulation of seaweed and waste at the beach.
