The Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis, has officially commissioned the newly constructed Hillside Hotel, describing the development as a major step toward strengthening Sierra Leone’s hospitality and tourism industry.

The commissioning ceremony, held on March 29, 2026, marked the opening of the 25-bedroom facility built by the Skaikay family, an investment the Minister said reflects growing confidence in the country’s tourism potential.

Speaking at the event, Minister Tunis praised the initiative, emphasizing the importance of private sector participation in national development. “This facility does not just offer beds; it showcases the potential of Sierra Leonean hospitality and the beauty of our landscape,” she stated.

The Hillside Hotel is located along the Dorwaila River and is designed to combine modern luxury with an eco-friendly environment. The hotel includes standard guest rooms equipped with contemporary amenities, as well as recreational and wellness facilities such as a gym and a children’s playground. It also features a restaurant offering both local and international cuisine.

According to information presented at the ceremony, the project is intended not only as a commercial venture but also as a contribution to the socio-economic development of Kenema. The Skaikay family described the investment as a reflection of their commitment to Sierra Leone, often referred to as “Mama Salone,” and their determination to support national growth through tourism.

Minister Tunis noted that developments such as the Hillside Hotel are critical to expanding domestic tourism and improving accommodation standards across the country. She highlighted that such facilities can help position Sierra Leone as an attractive destination for both local and international travelers.

The opening of the hotel is expected to create employment opportunities and enhance the capacity of Kenema as an emerging center for commerce and culture. With its modern infrastructure and strategic location, the Hillside Hotel is anticipated to play a key role in supporting the region’s growing tourism circuit.

The commissioning underscores ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs to encourage investment in the sector and promote Sierra Leone’s natural and cultural assets on a broader scale.
