A new treason trial commenced on Monday, March 3, 2025, at the High Court of Sierra Leone before Justice Alhaji Momoh Jah Stevens. Two individuals, Alie Badara Kanu and Thaimu Bangura, stand accused of conspiring to overthrow the government.

Inspector Abubakarr Kargbo, an investigator from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, provided key testimony, detailing the investigation and presenting evidence, including the voluntary caution statement of the first accused, Alie Badara Kanu.

According to the prosecution, Kanu, a retired military captain, and Bangura, along with unnamed accomplices, were involved in a plot to destabilize the government. The alleged conspiracy unfolded between June 24, 2023, and June 29, 2024.

Inspector Kargbo recounted receiving the treason report on April 21, 2024, and subsequently interviewing Kanu on two occasions. During these interviews, Kanu allegedly revealed details about the plot, including an alleged plan to execute the coup on June 19, 2024, coinciding with the conclusion of the Tripartite Committee’s work.

Kanu, however, denied the treason allegations in his statement, claiming he had been working in construction since retiring from the military. He admitted to meeting with individuals who discussed overthrowing both the APC and SLPP parties but maintained he expressed skepticism about the plan’s success.

The prosecution also presented evidence obtained from Kanu’s mobile phone, which was analyzed by the Cyber Unit. The findings of this analysis were not detailed in the initial testimony.

Defense Counsel S. Turay cross-examined Inspector Kargbo, challenging the evidence presented. The trial continues with further witnesses expected to be called.

Both Kanu and Bangura remain in custody. If convicted, they face severe penalties under Sierra Leonean law.
