The King’s Baton was officially handed over to the Sierra Leone Commonwealth Games Association in a ceremony at State House on Monday, presided over by UK High Commissioner Josephine Gauld.

Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh unveiled the Baton and emphasized the importance of sports in Sierra Leone’s development agenda.

Addressing representatives from the Ministry of Sports, National Sports Authority, Commonwealth Games Association, athletes, and the media, Sengeh stated that sports play a key role in the government’s “Five Big Game Changers” initiative.

“For athletes to compete at their best, they need proper nutrition, healthcare, and technology—all critical components of our development plan,” he said.

The Commonwealth Games, held every four years since 1930 (except during World War II), brings together athletes from member nations, primarily former British territories. This year’s King’s Baton Relay promotes unity and environmental sustainability, with a focus on the Ocean Plastics Campaign to combat marine pollution.

A highlight of the event was the unveiling of Sierra Leone’s uniquely designed Baton, created by UK-based Sierra Leonean fashion designer Foday Dumbuya of Labrum London.

“We are proud to see Sierra Leonean talent shaping this global tradition,” said High Commissioner Gauld.

The Baton will now begin its journey across Sierra Leone before the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
