Renowned BBC journalist Umaru Fofana has boldly criticized Sierra Leonean leaders, accusing them of being callous and clueless in their decision to impose increased taxes on airport charges. Fofana expressed his outrage, questioning the diligence of the cabinet and parliament in approving an agreement with the Summa Group that included such provisions.

In a scathing statement, Fofana remarked, “The more I look at the new and increased charges for those traveling through Sierra Leone’s airport, the more I feel outraged. How did the cabinet and parliament pass that agreement with the Summa Group without resisting those provisions contained therein! Or did they even read the agreement? It seems we have leaders who are either callous, parlous, or clueless – or even all combined.”

Fofana went on to highlight the potential advantages for neighboring Guinea due to Sierra Leone’s decision. According to him, the new taxes would lead to significant savings for passengers traveling from the US to Guinea. Despite the additional costs of traveling by road or sea from Conakry, a passenger could save around $1,000. Fofana seized the opportunity to suggest potential investments, stating, “It’s time to buy shares at Sea Coach water taxi. Or invest in a coach service from Freetown to Conakry airport. Agony of a people!!

This critique from a respected journalist like Umaru Fofana adds fuel to the ongoing debate surrounding the economic decisions made by Sierra Leonean leaders. The implications of these increased taxes are not only causing concern among the citizens but are also seen as potentially benefiting neighboring countries like Guinea.

As Sierra Leone fight with economic challenges, Fofana’s outspoken condemnation brings attention to the need for transparent decision-making and responsible governance in the face of economic policies affecting the citizens directly.
