The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Sierra Leone’s Free Quality School Education (FQSE) Secretariat, operating under the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), have successfully completed a nationwide verification exercise.
This initiative paves the way for the imminent rollout of a significant education support project.
Funded by China Aid with a value of nearly US$2 million, the “Improved Public Educational Service Facilities for Youth in Sierra Leone” project is designed to enhance educational facilities in selected chiefdoms and public schools across 10 districts.
The project is a component of ongoing efforts to bolster President Julius Maada Bio’s flagship Free Quality School Education (FQSE) initiative, which serves as a central pillar of the government’s Human Capital Development agenda.
According to Augustine Moses Koroma, National Programme Coordinator at the FQSE Secretariat, the project will supply 10,000 sets of classroom furniture, including tables and chairs, to underserved schools nationwide. “This is a practical step towards improving learning environments and ensuring quality in education,” Koroma stated. “It demonstrates the governments and partners’ unwavering commitment to investing in our children’s future.”
Since its launch in August 2018, the FQSE initiative has seen considerable progress, including increased school enrollment, improved provision of teaching and learning materials, and recognition both nationally and internationally. The new project is anticipated to further accelerate these achievements and enhance the learning experience for thousands of students across the country.
The recent assessment exercise was jointly led by Mr. Koroma and Madam Ndeye Aminata Diop from UNDP Sierra Leone. Their team visited numerous schools to confirm existing needs and assess readiness for the project’s implementation.
The project is being implemented by UNDP Sierra Leone on behalf of UNDP China, in close collaboration with key partners, including the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education.
