To tackle youth unemployment and enhance technical skills, UNDP Sierra Leone, in partnership with the National Youth Commission and Sierra Tropical Ltd (a Dole Asia Holdings company), has launched a training programme for 100 young people.
The initiative aims to equip participants with hands-on, market-ready skills in machine operations, automobile repairs, welding, and fabrication.

At the launch event, UNDP’s Resident Representative, Mr. Frederick Ampiah, shared the importance of the initiative.
He said, “This initiative supports our commitment to youth employment and private sector development. By investing in employable skills, we are helping to create an enabling environment where businesses can thrive while young people secure sustainable livelihoods.”

Also, he stated that this isn’t just training, it’s a guaranteed pathway to employment. Every trainee who completes the programme will be hired by Sierra Tropical Ltd.
Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Sierra Leone, Hon. Patrick Michaelson Gibrilla, added, “This programme is a shining example of what public-private collaboration can achieve for youth empowerment. It’s about giving our young people the tools they need to succeed, contribute to national development, and earn a decent living.”
Furthermore, the Managing Director of Sierra Tropical Ltd, Mr Kwame Wiafe, announced that all the trainees would be offered employment by the Company.

Speaking at the launching also, Ahmed Atata, the outgoing Commissioner of the National Youth Commission of Sierra Leone, noted that the initiative reflects our vision for youth development, equipping young people with the right skills and linking them directly to employment.
Finally, the initiative is a milestone; it’s a movement toward inclusive growth, youth empowerment, and stronger partnerships for national development.
