The University of Makeni (UNIMAK) officially welcomed 1,124 new students during its 2025/2026 academic year matriculation ceremony on December 13, 2025, at the Fatima Campus auditorium.

The event was attended by university leadership, staff, and students, including Chancellor His Excellency Bishop Bob John H. Koroma and Vice Chancellor Professor Joseph Turay.

In his address, Professor Turay emphasized that the matriculation represented an important step in the university’s contribution to the rebuilding of Sierra Leone following the civil conflict.

He reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to upholding the dignity of the individual and highlighted UNIMAK’s role in fostering hope and respect within a divided society. “UNIMAK is a place to celebrate hope in a divided world and to build a civilization of love,” he said.

Chancellor Bishop Koroma delivered the keynote speech, expressing his pleasure at joining the ceremony and noting the diverse backgrounds of the new students.

He pointed out that the matriculants came from every province and district of Sierra Leone, with the 1,124 students enrolled across 18 departments. “This diversity is a reason for hope for the future of Sierra Leone,” he stated.

Registrar Foday Augustine Bangura administered the oath to the new students, urging them to embrace values of integrity and honesty throughout their time at UNIMAK. He called on the students to uphold these principles both inside and outside the classroom.

Representing the incoming class, LLB Year One student Prick Lady Nassah pledged to adhere to the university’s ethical standards, promising to follow the guidance of the Vice Chancellor and Chancellor. “We commit to upholding the ethical code of conduct outlined in the student handbook,” she said.

Mass Communication lecturer Paul Kamara described the ceremony as one of the most successful matriculations in the university’s history, praising the students for their exemplary behavior and conduct.
