The United States Deputy Assistant Secretary for West Africa (DAS), Michael Heath, made his inaugural visit to Sierra Leone, as announced by the US Embassy on their social media platforms.

During his visit, DAS Heath emphasized the significance of inclusive national dialogue to rebuild confidence in Sierra Leone’s democracy. He highlighted this point during his meeting with Vice President Juldeh Jalloh.

The US Embassy also stressed that for the MCC Compact to progress, meaningful democratic and electoral reforms must be implemented.

DAS Heath further assured Vice President Jalloh of the US’s support for ECOWAS leadership in preserving constitutional order in Niger, emphasizing that stability in the Sahel region hinges on the restoration of credible and democratic governance.

The Secretary expressed his concerns for a free press and the right to peaceful assembly, underscoring their pivotal roles in a democracy. He held a productive meeting with Sierra Leone’s press corps to emphasize these principles.

In addition, DAS Heath highlighted the US commitment to private-sector-led, broad-based economic growth during his discussion with Finance Minister Sheku Bangura. He emphasized that sustained economic reforms would attract increased foreign direct investment, ultimately benefiting the people of Sierra Leone.

The US Embassy also mentioned that the Secretary welcomed a close partnership with Sierra Leone on the UN Security Council, emphasizing the importance of upholding international law and defending sovereignty and territorial integrity, particularly in light of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.

In his meeting with APC Leader Samura Kamara, DAS Heath stressed the importance of constructive opposition participation in national dialogue and national institutions, placing the revitalization of democracy ahead of partisan concerns.
