The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a two-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted in Normiyama Village, Kori Chiefdom, Moyamba District.

According to the Ministry, the child was taken to Moyamba Government Hospital on Saturday, 25th October 2025, for treatment of suspected malaria.

During examination, medical staff observed severe bleeding and swelling in her genital and anal areas, raising suspicions of sexual assault. She sadly passed away the following morning, Sunday, 26th October 2025.

Following established protocols for handling suspected Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) cases, the Ministry, in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Police, transferred the child’s remains to Freetown for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. The child has since been laid to rest.

A joint team from the Ministry, the Family Support Unit (FSU), and civil society partners visited Normiyama Village to gather additional information. Police have arrested six suspects, who are currently assisting with the investigation.

Senior technical officials from the Ministry, led by the Director of Children’s Affairs, were present during the autopsy process in Freetown. The autopsy report has been handed over to the police to aid their investigation.

The Ministry emphasized that it continues to work closely with law enforcement, health authorities, community stakeholders, and parents to ensure justice is served.

In a statement, the Ministry strongly condemned all acts of violence against children and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting every child in Sierra Leone.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and assure the public that we are working with law enforcement and partners across government and civil society to prevent violence and support survivors,” the statement said.
