On Monday, May 6th, 2024, a groundbreaking collaboration between the United States government and Africell CEO Shadi Al-Gerjawi commenced with the launch of a feasibility study aimed at bolstering internet accessibility across Sierra Leone. The initiative, made possible through funding from the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, signals a pivotal step towards bridging the digital divide in the West African nation.
In attendance were Ambassador Hunt, Africell CEO Shadi Al-Gerjawi, and Minister of Communication Salima Bah, who jointly unveiled plans for the ambitious project. Ambassador Hunt highlighted the significance of international partnerships in facilitating private sector investment, emphasizing the transformative potential such endeavors hold for Sierra Leone’s economic landscape.
“This partnership is indicative of the supportive role that the United States and other international partners can play in incentivizing and de-risking private sector-led investment in Sierra Leone,” remarked Ambassador Hunt. “It is my hope that partnerships like this one will continue to expand across the full range of Sierra Leone’s economic sectors, bringing with them the investment, job creation, and economic opportunities that can fundamentally transform this country.”
The feasibility study aims to assess the viability of expanding internet infrastructure throughout Sierra Leone, thereby fostering greater connectivity and socioeconomic development. By leveraging the expertise of Africell, a leading telecommunications provider, in tandem with strategic support from the U.S. government, the initiative seeks to lay the groundwork for a more inclusive and prosperous future for all Sierra Leoneans.
With the launch of this pivotal study, stakeholders are optimistic about the prospects of enhancing digital connectivity, empowering communities, and unlocking new opportunities for growth and innovation in Sierra Leone. As efforts progress, the collective endeavor stands poised to chart a course towards a more connected and prosperous future for the nation.
