The United States Embassy in Freetown has commended the government of Sierra Leone and the All Peoples Congress (APC) for their progress in implementing the Agreement for National Unity, specifically Article IV, which focuses on national reconciliation and stability.

This positive development comes as charges against Councillor Sheku Alhassan Gibril Turay (also known as Cllr Ice T), a member of the main opposition APC party, were dismissed.

This action marks the beginning of the implementation of Resolution 4, a key component of the agreement aimed at fostering reconciliation and strengthening democratic processes.

The US Embassy expressed optimism about further releases as the implementation process continues, highlighting the importance of building trust in the judiciary’s ability to deliver justice for all Sierra Leoneans. This step is seen as crucial for long-term democratic reform in the country.

“Congratulations to the Government and the All Peoples Congress on the progress made today in the implementation of Article IV of the Agreement for National Unity,” the US Embassy stated on Twitter (X). “Continuing to build confidence in the courts’ ability to deliver justice for all Sierra Leoneans is a key step on the journey towards enduring democratic reform.”

Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, also welcomed the development, expressing hope for continued progress in the implementation of Resolution 4.
