The United States Embassy in Freetown, along with other partners, is set to host the US-Africa Confab on Gender and Maritime Security on January 14-15, 2025.

This event is a collaboration between the U.S. Naval Forces Europe, U.S. Africa Command, the U.S. Embassy, and the Mission of Iceland to Sierra Leone

The inaugural African Maritime Gender Network (AMGN) Conference on Gender Considerations in Maritime Security will take place at the Radisson Blu in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Distinguished speakers at the conference will include Hon. Ambassador Bryan D. Hunt, Head of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Freetown, Hon. Ambassador Robert Scott, Deputy Commander for Civil-Military Engagement at U.S. Africa Command, Hon. Ásdís Bjarnadóttir, Chargé d’affaires of Iceland to Sierra Leone, and Mr. William Moeller, Foreign Policy Advisor at U.S. Naval Forces Europe and Africa.

Participants from various countries including Sierra Leone, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Benin, Namibia, Gabon, Liberia, and Nigeria will be attending the conference. The focus will be on important topics such as Gender Considerations in Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing (IUUF) in the Gulf of Guinea, Increasing Female Participation in the Security Sectors/Decision Making, How Gender Affects International, Humanitarian, and Maritime Law, and Economic Empowerment: Why Women Matter in the Maritime Sector.

The main goal of the conference is to facilitate discussions on countering maritime threats from a gender perspective. It will serve as a platform for experts and stakeholders to exchange insights, address challenges, and explore opportunities for promoting gender inclusion in the maritime sector. This event highlights the commitment of the U.S. and its partners to advancing gender equality and strengthening maritime security in Africa through defense, diplomacy, and development.
