The U.S. Embassy in Sierra Leone has announced that it will be closed for official business today, January 20, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday in the United States.

Normal Embassy operations will resume on Tuesday, January 21.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, celebrated on the third Monday of January, was established as a national day of service in 1994.

Dr. King, a prominent pastor and leader of the Civil Rights Movement, is revered for his powerful speeches and sermons that championed American ideals and inspired citizens to serve their communities.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Dr. King famously stated.
