Residents and traders in Portee have raised concerns about waste piling up near the Freetown City Council (FCC) building’s parking area.

They are calling on Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr to remove the waste and maintain cleanliness around the council office.

The community says the space just outside the FCC offices at Portee Market has become filled with waste, making it difficult for people to move freely and affecting the area’s cleanliness. Some have described the waste-filled spot as a “doty box,” a common name for places where garbage piles up, causing discomfort to residents and workers nearby.

The calls from Portee come at a time when Mayor Aki-Sawyerr is preparing to fully enforce the Solid and Liquid Waste Collection Byelaws 2024. These byelaws divide Freetown into eight waste management blocks and smaller zones to improve waste collection services.

Through the #DortiMusGo campaign, the mayor is encouraging all residents to help keep the city clean by following the rules and reporting any places where waste is not properly managed. Residents are also asked to register with approved waste service providers to support better waste disposal.

The Portee community continues to ask Mayor Aki-Sawyerr to address the waste near the FCC building quickly and create a cleaner environment for everyone.
