Leader of the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) in Parliament, Hon. Abdul Kargbo has warned that former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ambrose Michael Sovula will face strict oversight on his new role as the new Chairman of the National Commission on Small Arms.

Kargbo made this known while congratulating the former police chief on his appointment by President Julius Maada Bio, making clear that his performance would be subject to sustained scrutiny.

“We on this side wish you well in your new role as Chairman of the National Commission on Small Arms,” Kargbo said. “We will also be monitoring your professional conduct as well.”

The appointment, made by President Julius Maada Bio, received backing from lawmakers across the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) and the opposition All People’s Congress (APC). MPs praised Sovula’s record in law enforcement and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the commission.

While acknowledging Sovula’s professionalism during his tenure as IGP, Kargbo urged him to draw on his experience to ensure that firearms do not reach unauthorized individuals, regardless of their political or social standing.

Finance Committee Chairman Hon. Keikura Christopher Vandy described Sovula as a seasoned public servant capable of continuing to contribute to national security. Deputy Majority Leader II Hon. Saa Emerson Lamina said the former police chief’s extensive law enforcement experience left him well-equipped to tackle the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, urging him to act with professionalism, integrity, and impartiality.

Deputy Chief Whip and leader of Sierra Leone’s ECOWAS Parliamentary Delegation, Hon. Veronica Kadie Sesay, encouraged Sovula to replicate—and surpass—the achievements of his police leadership and to make both President Bio and the people of Sierra Leone proud.

The National Commission on Small Arms plays an important role in regulating and controlling the spread of small arms and light weapons, a critical component of Sierra Leone’s peace and security architecture.
