The Cardinal Kevin Farrell has in the early hours of Monday, 21st 2025 announced the death of the 266th Successor of St. Peter, Pope Francis, at the age of 88.
In a heartfelt message, Cardinal Farrell expressed, “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 am this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.”
He added that Pope Francis dedicated his entire life to the service of the Lord and His Church, emphasizing his teachings of living Gospel values with “fidelity, courage, and universal love,” particularly for the poorest and most marginalized.
The pontiff, who became pope in 2013 following the resignation of his predecessor, Benedict XVI, had been battling pneumonia and bronchitis leading up to his death. Cardinal Farrell further stated, “The Lord has called home His servant,” reflecting on the depth of Pope Francis’s influence both within the Church and beyond.
Pope Francis, known for his humility and compassion, referred to the Church as a “field hospital” for the wounded and searching. His ministry was marked by a call for a more merciful and listening Church that reaches out to those on the peripheries of society.
From his first appearance as Pope, greeting the world with “Fratelli e sorelle, buonasera,” he advocated for peace, care for creation, and support for the suffering. His tireless efforts have left a significant legacy in the life of the Church and the global community.
The Vatican calls on the faithful to pray for the repose of his soul, stating, “May perpetual light shine upon him, and may he rest in peace.”
Reflecting on his own journey of faith, Pope Francis once said, “I am a sinner, but I trust in the infinite mercy and patience of our Lord Jesus Christ.” He also encouraged people to “light candles of hope in the midst of darkness,” calling for courage in pursuing justice and peace.
The Director of communications office of the President Sierra Leone, Myk Berewa joined mourners in honoring the sudden death of Rome’s Bishop, expressing, “may you rest in peace, Pope Francis. Your unwavering voice championed the impoverished, the oppressed, the war-torn, and the displaced. May your legacy inspire our hope and bravery amidst the harshness of this world.”
A renowned Sierra Leonean Journalist, Umaru Fofanah shared his grief to the home-calling of the religious veteran, admitting that he was his favorites. He asserted, “RIP, Pope Francis. My favourite pontiff of all time – liberal and truly modest. He didn’t mince his words in speaking truth to those (Western) leaders who claim the world as theirs. An African Pope next?!”
