The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has raised concerned over the voters registration process announced by the National Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) ahead of next year ‘s general elections.
The Mayor raised this concern on a lost shared on social media.
According to the Mayor Aki-Sawyerr, Western Area Urban is under-resourced with less staff in the upcoming Voter Registration process.
“Voter registration is the first major activity within the electoral process. If there are insufficient staff at the registration centres, then those seeking to register can not all be attended to and inevitably many will not be able to register within the 30 days allotted by ECSL. It is therefore alarming that Western Area Urban (#Freetown) has been allocated only 592 registration staff, whilst Kenema has 781 registration staff and Bo has 693 registration staff. The population of Freetown is not 606,701; the population of Freetown has not reduced by 42.5% from 1,055,964 in 2015. Providing insufficient staff for the Freetown registration centres will reduce the number of #Freetonians who can register and therefore who can vote in Freetown. As the Mayor of Freetown, I am asking #ECSL to increase the number of staff in the Freetown registration centers so that Freetonians are not deprived of their constitutional right to be registered and to vote,” Yvonne Aki-Sawyer posted.
