Mohamed Kamaraimba Mansaray, popularly known as Kamaraimba, has spent over one year in detention after he was charged to court on the 21st of July 2020.
He is before the court on eight count charges; ranging from sexual penetration to engaging a child for sexual purposes.

His co-accused, Marion Arouni, is already out on bail after meeting the bail conditions set by the court.

But Kamaraimba continues to languish in detention after he allegedly failed to meet some conditions attached to his bail request on the 7th September 2021.
Since then, there has been a series of outburst from civil society and rights groups, the media, calling on government to consider the plight of Mohamed Kamaraimba since he is believed to be critically ill.

On February 22nd this year, a rights based social-policy advocacy organisation; Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI), visited Mohamed Kamaraimba at the Pademba Male Correctional center after an approval from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and prison officials.

A press release issued by CHRDI after the visit, exposed the plight of Kamaraimba and the deplorable condition of the country’s main prison. “Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray has serious medical challenges, which need immediate attention. Mr. Mansaray told CHRDI that he has spent a year and half in detention and has been diagnosed with prostate cancer by two medical Doctors while in detention.

He also disclosed that because of his medical condition, he has to use the toilet to urinate every 30-40 minutes, failing which, he will urinate on himself and he also revealed that about a year ago, a neurologist from ECO-MED, recommended to the Correctional Services that he should have a surgical operation which he was denied”, the release states.

His failing medical condition, has also been corroborated by other human rights organizations which in anyway deserves to be thoroughly investigated.
While Kamaraimba is definitely not before the court as a politician but an alleged offender, it will be a serious blow on the leadership of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio, if Kamaraimba is to die in detention. We are in a state where everything is being politicized.

Under the leadership of President Bio, the Judiciary has seen remarkable transformations in terms of giving easy access to Justice by citizens.

Those gains can only be consolidated if people like Kamaraimba benefits from a Presidential pardon on medical grounds.

Some people have committed crimes worse than that of Kamaraimba which is still pending before the court. But they are out today enjoying their liberties and Kamaraimba is slowly dying in detention.

There is an urgent need for a review of Kamarainba’s bail condition to allow him gain access to medical facilities that the Correctional Services cannot afford to provide.

We appeal to President to intervene on medical grounds to get Kamarainba released on bail and allowed to seek proper medical treatment. After all, President Bio is the Father of the Nation and a very magnanimous man. A man who does not entertain hard feelings even against his opponents. God bless President Bio!!!!
