In the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) there are hard working officers both male and female who try to raise the bar in the force. But the general picture being portrayed of the police is that of a corrupt and inept system. I beg to differ though.

In every institution there are bad eggs and so the police is not an exception. But that notwithstanding, it must be said that there are serving men and women who try to uphold the very principles of the force. Some serve with sincerity of purpose and these are the good officers who deserve recognition.

Let’s take the incident involving four hard core criminals who were in Lunsar and Port Loko, men who were involved in armed robbery as a way of life.

Led by Police Officer Jimmy J. Momoh the criminal ring was busted. The robbers were in different locations to avoid detection and were causing havoc in different areas, robbing people at gunpoint. The resolve of officer coupled with his Momoh professionalism, led to the dismantling of that dangerous criminal ring. The arrests began in Lunsar and then shifted to Port Loko. According to a source, they were found in possession of two rifles that
Seized by officer Momoh and his team. The first suspect arrested in Lamsar reportedly confessed he had accomplices in Port Loko who were with guns. He led the police to an area in Port Loko called Kamaranka where he identified Joseph Kamara alias Ice whom he claimed was custodian of the weapons. The weapons were indeed found.

The investigations also led to the Police arrest of another member of the gang Bai Kargbo nicknamed ‘Effort’ with his girlfriend. Another girlfriend of a suspect was also arrested. In all, four men and two women were detained.

Also fourteen rounds of ammunition got confiscated, The officers did a perfect job and should be commended.

If we have officers who are passionate about their work and are ready to go the extra mile to weed out such criminals, they should be encouraged, and duly recognised. These are the kind officers who should be considered when it comes to promotion so it will serve as motivation for others to do better.

professionalism in the line of duty should not go unrecognised. With the motto a Force for Good’, it must be seen that serving men and women promoted not because of connection with the leadership but based purely on merits.
