As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, Muslims worldwide are reminded that the beginning of the fast is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, a practice rooted in the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and not solely by pre-calculated astronomical data.

The Prophet’s (peace be upon him) guidance is clear: “Fast when you see it (the crescent) and break your fast when you see it. If it is cloudy, then complete Sha’ban as thirty days.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1909, Sahih Muslim 1081)

This hadith emphasizes the importance of the actual moon sighting and discourages determining the start of Ramadan before the end of Sha’ban or without confirmation of the crescent. Following this Sunnah is essential for observing Ramadan correctly.

Regrettably, some individuals and groups circulate premature announcements about the start of Ramadan, often based on calculations rather than the established practice of moon sighting. Such actions contradict the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) teachings and can lead to confusion within the Muslim community.

A call goes out to those disseminating such messages to fear Allah and adhere to the Sunnah. Ramadan is not a festival with a fixed calendar date; it is an act of worship that commences only upon the confirmed sighting of the crescent moon. Adhering to this established practice unites the Muslim community in their observance of this sacred month.

May Allah grant us the wisdom and strength to follow His guidance accurately and enable us to witness Ramadan in good health and with unwavering faith. Ameen.
