We saw the news that a famous Nigerian TikTok influencer, Jarvis, is in Freetown to teach young students about using social media. That sounds good—but let’s think about it carefully.
Why bring someone from Nigeria, who only started content creation last year, when we already have strong and successful Sierra Leonean content creators here?
What About Vickie Remoe?
Vickie Remoe has been teaching content creation in Sierra Leone for over 7 years. She is not just a content creator—she is one of our best! She has helped many young people learn how to use social media in a smart and positive way. Her work speaks for itself. Even big names like Hawanatu Konneh, one of our top bloggers, learned from her.
If the money spent to bring Jarvis here was around $52,000, imagine what that could have done for local programs already running in Sierra Leone. We are not saying this to be mean—we are saying this because we need to build our own people.
Here’s Why Local Content Matters:
- Local creators know our culture and can teach in ways our people understand better.
- They know the challenges young Sierra Leoneans face online.
- They stay here and continue to help even after the big events are over.
- Supporting them means we are growing our own economy and giving chances to more young Sierra Leoneans.
- Nigeria already has a strong content creation market. Sierra Leone doesn’t. So why not help build our own platform?
When it’s time to teach or share opportunities, we should start with the people who have been doing the work here. It’s not about hating on others—it’s about giving respect and support to our own heroes first.
“Noto pa bad oo,” but we have powerful women like Vickie Remoe who have been in this game for more than 10 years. It’s time we recognize them and build from inside before looking outside.
Let’s support Sierra Leonean content creators. Let’s grow our own digital voice.
I totally agreed with promoting our but unfortunately, ours turned into politicians as soon as they got fame.
This only leaves us with nothing to write about home. It’s like exporting brains and importing solutions in theoretical terms. A change we want to see have to start with us, leaving our content creators behind the line shows that we don’t value our own minds, we don’t respect our individuality and hence the World will never look out for us since we are not looking out for ourselves.
Sad Reality but it is well 😞
