Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr OBE has officially declared her intention to seek the flag bearer position of the All People’s Congress (APC) Party in the 2028 elections.
In a recent interview, Mayor Aki-Sawyerr confirmed her candidacy, expressing confidence in her ability to lead the APC. “Yes, I am vying for the leadership of the political party that I’m humble to serve and to be a part of, proud to be a part of,” she stated.
“And I believe that by God’s grace, because as we all know, power comes from God, if it is his will and with the support of the party that I love and the people that vote for that party because this is an internal election. I believe that this is something we will achieve.”
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr highlighted her track record as evidence of her leadership capabilities. “Over the years, I have demonstrated strong leadership, effective governance, and a commitment to development, both within my party and for the people of Sierra Leone,” she said.
Her announcement marks a significant development in the lead-up to the 2028 elections, signaling her ambition to transition from municipal leadership to national political office. The APC’s internal election process will determine whether she secures the party’s nomination.
