The All People’s Congress (APC) National Secretary General has issued a formal statement defending remarks he made regarding Sierra Leone’s 2023 general elections, following his detention by the Sierra Leone Police.

In his statement to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the APC Secretary General said the comments attributed to him, made on or about January 31, were political opinions expressed in good faith. He explained that his remarks were grounded in publicly available reports and observations from both international and domestic election monitoring bodies.

He clarified that the position expressed was not a personal view but reflected the long-standing stance of the APC concerning alleged irregularities during the 2023 elections. The party has, since the conclusion of the polls, repeatedly raised concerns over the transparency, conduct, and outcomes of the electoral process, alleging that the results may not have reflected the will of the people.

The APC Secretary General stressed that his statement was made within the context of lawful political discourse and democratic engagement, as allowed by the Constitution. He also noted that, to his knowledge, no comprehensive or validated official results were conclusively published, an issue that continues to fuel public debate and concern both locally and internationally.

Rejecting any suggestion of malice or criminal intent, he emphasized that his comments were aimed at articulating a widely shared political view and did not promote violence or hatred. He reiterated his commitment to peace, the rule of law, and the use of lawful democratic channels to address political disagreements.

“I stand by my position as a political opinion and ideas based on public reports and unresolved electoral concerns, but I do not stand by any interpretation that suggests violence, hatred, or criminal intent,” he stated.

The APC Secretary General’s detention by the Inspector General of Police comes amid ongoing debates over electoral integrity and freedom of expression in Sierra Leone, highlighting the delicate balance between political criticism and legal oversight.
