In a hotly contested election, Abdul Augustus Kamason has been narrowly elected the main opposition All Peoples Congress Parliamentary candidate of Constituency 049.

The constituency covers three chiefdoms – Kholifa Mabang, Kholifa Mamunta Mayossoh and Malal, all of Tonkolili District, Northern Sierra Leone.

Born in Malal Chiefdom, Kamason scored 27 votes and defeated the incumbent and sitting MP – Hon Hassan Sankoh and five others to become the party’s next candidate in the area.

Constituency 049 is always highly contested because politicians from the three chiefdoms seem to battle for supremacy.

The outgone MP is from Mamunta Mayossoh and those from the chiefdom of the now-winner have also been using the slogan “It’s our time”.

However, political analysts said Kamason draws support from almost all of the three chiefdoms because of the intervention of his foundation – the Kamason Foundation for Youth and Children.

Nonetheless, there have been concerns from the camps of the losers. Most of them have accused some of the party executives of interfering in the process thereby influencing the decision or outcome of the election.

Like many parts of the country, Constituency 049 is been deprived of many basic amenities.
