Hon. Mohamed Bangura has commended President Julius Maada Bio for his measured approach to political tensions surrounding former President Ernest Bai Koroma.
Speaking to Truth Media on Koroma’s potential return to Sierra Leone, Bangura recalled the former president’s arrest amid treason charges that had sparked national concern.
“Everybody was saying that former president Koroma is responsible for the country not having peace. Then the international community, through ECOWAS, intervened and advised that the matter be dropped and that he be allowed to live in exile,” Bangura said.
He also described his engagement with President Bio regarding another individual linked to the case. Bangura noted that the ongoing court proceedings created tension whenever Koroma was present, disrupting police and military operations, and affecting local businesses.
“If President Bio were wicked, he would have insisted that Koroma face trial. But he chose otherwise,” Bangura added.
The MP concluded that, for the sake of peace, Koroma may be better off remaining outside Sierra Leone. His comments followed reports that Koroma intends to return home, as revealed by his attorney, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara.
