Mohamed C. Bah, leader of Sierra Leone’s National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Party and a prominent figure in the recent multi-tier elections, addressed the nation in response to the tragic November 26 incident in Freetown. The event, labeled an attempted coup by the government, resulted in the loss of eighteen security forces.

Expressing profound sorrow over the attack and the subsequent prison break at Pademba Road Prison, Bah denounced the use of violence in resolving political differences. “No winner emerged from our brutal civil war yesterday, and no winner should arise today if we resort to violence and deadly force,” he emphasized, calling for unity and rejecting the use of military means in settling political disputes.

Highlighting the ramifications of the incident on the nation’s stability and economy, Bah stressed the urgent need for national cohesion, advocating for political inclusivity, respect for the rule of law, and social justice. He urged the establishment of democratic and independent institutions, emphasizing the critical role of institutions like the Electoral Commission in maintaining peace and democracy.

Addressing the immediate needs of the people, Bah emphasized the necessity for fundamental amenities over militarized measures. “Clean drinking water, accessible education, consistent electricity, and sustainable employment opportunities are what our people truly require,” he asserted, steering the focus away from checkpoints and curfews.

In his comprehensive vision for the country’s future, Bah highlighted the importance of skills empowerment, technological advancement, and infrastructure development to attract international investment. He also urged the government to address prison overcrowding by constructing new facilities, ensuring a faster pace of justice for inmates.
