The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has issued a strongly worded response rejecting a statement by the All Peoples’ Congress (APC) that accused the SLPP’s new National Chairman, Jimmy Batilo Songa, of calling on the security forces to stop the APC from winning the 2028 election.
In a press release, the SLPP categorically and unequivocally refuted the APC’s claims, which were titled “STATEMENT ON THREATS TO DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE AND THE NEUTRALITY OF STATE INSTITUTIONS.”
The SLPP addressed the APC’s claim that Chairman Songa “called upon the President, the Army, Soldiers and Marshals to stop the APC in 2028” as a “complete subterfuge and a desperate attempt to mislead the public by inciting fear and confusion.”
The SLPP clarified that those who attended the event, watched it live, or reviewed the recording can confirm that Chairman Songa, in his address, “energetically rallied SLPP members and affiliates in what he referred to as the Party’s ‘Political Army’, to work democratically and peacefully to prevent the APC from returning to power in 2028.”
The SLPP explicitly stated that the term “Political Army” clearly refers to “SLPP leadership, grassroots supporters, marshals, bloggers, and affiliate groups.”
The SLPP accused the APC’s release of being “perforated with distortions and falsehoods” and of attempting to fabricate a narrative of “threats to democracy.”
The SLPP asserted that its “Political Army” stands for unity, democracy, and national progress, emphasizing that the party remains “unwavering in its commitment to peace, inclusivity, and democratic governance.”
“Our democracy is stronger than lies, and our people are no longer swayed by the politics of fear,” the statement read.
