Abu Bakarr Kargbo, the Chairman of the Sierra Leone People’s Party in Constituency 33, Bombali District, in the Northeast region, has been immediately suspended by the party leadership in the District.
According to a letter dated 4th February 2025, Kargbo was suspended for misconduct, insubordination, violence, and riotous conduct.
During a consultative meeting held on Tuesday, 4th February 2025, at the regional party office, 13 Kamal Street in the Northern city of Makeni, the party District Secretariat says Kargbo forcefully collected and carted away a substantial number of party membership cards without authorization.
The alleged incident reportedly occurred in the presence of the Secretary General of the party’s National Young Generation, Dwight ZK Sherrif, the National Returning Officer for Bombali District, and other party members.
Kargbo, the letter said, was advised by the party leadership to return the ID cards but refused.
“Despite multiple requests from the National Returning Officer and the District Executive members, you refused to return the cards,” the letter reads.
Kargbo’s action, the party District leadership in Bombali says, caused significant disruption and concern among party members. Such behaviour, the party added, displayed a blatant disregard for party protocols and exhibited violent and riotous conduct.
“The District Executive members, along with the National Returning Officer, condemn your gross indiscipline and flagrant disregard for party rules and regulations,” the letter further reads.
The party says Kargbo’s actions have significantly undermined the core values of the SLPP.
The Sierra Leone People’s Party will soon hold its lower-level elections across the country. In the letter, the District said the actions of the Chairman have compromised the integrity of the electoral process in the District. Kargbo is contesting for Secretary General of the party in Bombali District against the incumbent, Abu Bakarr Taal, an Executive member and one of those who suspended the chairman
While Kargbo is asked not to attend all party activities until an investigation is conducted, an interim chairman was announced by the party.
“For the time being, Alpha Thonkara Gbla will serve as Acting Chairman for Constituency 33 until further notice,” according to the letter.
All membership cards allegedly carted away by the Chairman have been declared null and void.
Responding to the suspension, Kargbo described the action of the party as a distraction and move to silence him and his supporters.
He said the allegations that he forcefully collected and carted away the ID cards are true but did so because the leadership failed to listen and address his concerns.
“We are pleased to inform the leadership of the SLPP at regional and national levels that the distribution of the party cards for the lower-level elections in our district is wrongly done by Alhaji Mohamed Mugambo Saffa, the district chairman of the party, the suspended Chairman said.
Kargbo said the whole issue started when Mugambo, the District Chairman announced that out of the eight (😎 constituencies in Bombali, only four will receive their membership cards in the party office while others later, and the statement, he said was made in the presence of the Secretary, National Young Generation Council.
It will also shock you to know that 1000 cards were placed on the table for the four constituencies (31, 32, 35, and 33), and each is to receive 250. All these happened before Mr. Dwight,” Kargbo alleges.
Dwight, who was representing the National Executive in the meeting, Kargbo alleged, did not say a word to correct such a statement made, and he allowed the wrong distribution to go on.
Dwight is not immediately available to verify that allegation.
For transparency and integrity in the entire electioneering process in Bombali district, the suspended chairman said he’s asking that the leadership in the region and national to set up a committee to investigate the wrong distribution of cards and what he called his illegal suspension.
