Africell Sierra Leone has officially sponsored the national under-18 volleyball team as they prepare to compete in the CAVB U18 Beach Volleyball Continental Cup.
The sponsorship agreement was signed during a ceremony on July 25th, 2025, at Africell’s headquarters in Wilberforce, Freetown.
The Continental Cup, organized by the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB), serves as a qualification tournament for the FIVB U19 Beach Volleyball World Championships.

Africell CEO Shadi Al-Gerjawi expressed the company’s long-standing commitment to the sport. “Africell has a long and proud history of supporting volleyball in Sierra Leone. This is not just a one-off gesture; our involvement spans nearly 15 years, rooted in passion and consistency,” he stated.
He went forward to recognize Sierra Leone’s achievements in volleyball, noting that the country has frequently outperformed more popular sports like football and basketball.
Al-Gerjawi expressed optimism for the U18 team’s performance at the Continental Cup. “Africell will remain a steadfast partner in their journey,” he assured.
Ahmed Kanu, President of the Volleyball Federation of Sierra Leone (VFSL), praised Africell’s support, calling the telecom company “more than a sponsor but a true partner in progress.”

He noted that Africell’s backing has enabled Sierra Leonean teams to qualify for prestigious events, including the World Championships in Poland and the Youth Games in Nanjing, China.
Kanu also asserted the importance of the Africell Beach Arena, a facility built through their partnership, which serves as the main training and competition venue for beach volleyball in Sierra Leone. “Our team is not going just to participate. We are going to compete,” Kanu said, emphasizing their aim for medals.
The U18 team, featuring some of Sierra Leone’s most promising young athletes, will travel to Nigeria for the Continental Cup. A successful performance could secure the country a spot in the 2026 FIVB U19 Beach Volleyball World Championships, enhancing Sierra Leone’s profile in the sport.
Africell’s involvement has been deemed crucial in promoting volleyball locally, with initiatives that include training camps and sponsorship of local tournaments.
The latest sponsorship follows Africell’s recent recognition of Sierra Leone’s basketball team, which won gold in regional competitions, reflecting a broader commitment to youth sports.
