Azerbaijan emerged victorious in a high-stakes FIFA Series clash on Monday, defeating Sierra Leone 9-8 in a marathon penalty shootout after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time.
The contest, characterized by physical play and late-game heroics, was finally decided when Azerbaijani goalkeeper Aydin Bayramov saved a gentle strike from Sierra Leone’s tenth penalty taker, Alpha Turay, ending a “sudden death” sequence that saw both teams remain clinical under immense pressure.
