The Executive Director of the National Sports Authority, Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, confirmed that the Government of Sierra Leone has granted full financial support to the Leone Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Guinea-Bissau and Egypt.
This support is to secure the nation’s place among the leading teams in the current qualification campaign.
Dr. Abdulai expressed gratitude for President Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to the sports industry, talking about the considerable investments made to promote football in the country. He praised President Bio’s leadership as a “fountain of honors,” stating the president’s commitment to strengthening young people through sports.
The Executive Director said that President Bio’s interest in the sports business dates back to his days during the NPRC government, when he helped to improve the country’s sports through projects such as the Zoutou Football Tournament.
Dr. Abdulai added the government’s role in improving the country’s top soccer league. He said that the president’s sustained investment in the sport has resulted in great improvements and increased possibilities for young athletes.
Dr. Abdulai also explained the broader implications of the government’s strategic approach to sports development, which he believes will not only improve the country’s football but also provide career opportunities for young people in the sporting industry.
