Organizers of the Closet Football Competition in Lungi are reeling with shame and disappointment following the failure of Sierra Leone Football Association President, Thomas Daddy Brima, to deliver on a pledge of Le 150m (old Leones) and footballs for the competition.

It is not yet clear why the SLFA President appears to have reneged on his promise. Efforts to reach him have remained futile, but we have learned that the competition, which ended yesterday, was also supposed to have been graced by the SLFA boss, who neither showed up nor called to inform the organizers about his failure to attend or provide the cash he promised.

The Closet Competition, held annually in Lungi, Kafu Bullom, Port Loko District, has been a hotbed for football scouts from both home and abroad. The league has nurtured and produced footballing talents who have gone on to play for the National Team, Leone Stars, local Premier League clubs, and clubs outside the country.

Proceeds from this year’s Closet League, we are told, would be used to equip, expand, and pay the salaries of teachers who are not on the government payroll at a community secondary school. This would, in turn, promote human capital development, a key priority of the government of Sierra Leone.
