Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has announced that the rehabilitation of the National Stadium is on track to be completed within 18 to 20 months, following a $50 million grant from China to modernize the stadium and enhance the Country’s sports infrastructure.
In a recent address, Dr. Sengeh highlighted the collaborative efforts of key stakeholders, including the Minister of Sports, the National Sports Authority (NSA), the Chinese Ambassador, and the contractors involved. He stressed the importance of transparency and teamwork in ensuring the project’s success.
The rehabilitation project is divided into three phases. The first phase focuses on renovating hostels and constructing a perimeter fence. Dr. Sengeh reported that the hostels, which include 55 single rooms and 45 double rooms, are approximately 90% complete, with furniture already delivered.
He stressed on the need for effective management to maintain those facilities and prevent deterioration over time. The perimeter fence is also a priority, with plans to complete it by December 2025.
The second phase would reportedly rehabilitate the swimming pool, which includes a full men’s pool and a children’s pool. Although diving facilities were not part of the initial plans, Dr. Sengeh announced that contractors are expected to submit designs and financial proposals for those facilities within a month, with an estimated completion time of 12 months.
The final phase is poised to focus on the main bowl seating. Originally designed to hold 35,000 spectators without seats, following the report from David Sengeh, the stadium will now accommodate 23,000 with chairs, with safety and engineering assessments. The seating will reportedly be provided by China Aid, with installation scheduled to begin in October 2025 and expected to take 14 months.
Dr. Sengeh reiterated the government’s commitment to completing the first phase by December 2025 and the entire project within the 18 to 20-month timeframe. He acknowledged delays due to safety concerns, financial considerations, and design modifications but emphasized the importance of addressing those issues for the project’s success.
The Chief Minister called for ongoing collaboration among all stakeholders to overcome challenges and achieve the project’s objectives. He assured that any unforeseen issues not covered by the initial agreement would be resolved without additional funding from China.
Dr. Sengeh concluded by expressing optimism about the project’s progress and its potential positive impact on Sierra Leone’s sports infrastructure and international standing.
Hmm 20 month again oh Sierra Leone 🇸🇱
The capacity has reduced too much and it will seriously impact tension whenever there’s a big function.
