The 2023/24 Leone Rock Premier League season nears its dramatic conclusion, with two teams already confirmed for relegation.

The battle for survival, however, continues for Freetown City Football Club (FCFC) and Real Republicans. Both teams hang precariously above the drop zone, with Republicans currently in 16th place on 29 points from 32 matches. Freetown City FC holds a slight advantage with 31 points, but both teams need victories in their remaining matches to secure Premier League status.

While mathematically still possible, both FCFC and Real Republicans face an uphill battle. A combination of victories and favorable results elsewhere will be crucial to determine who joins the top tier next season.

In their last matches, Real Republican suffered a 4-1 defeat to Ports Authority while FCFC match and Wilberforce FC still hung on the balance as the match came to an abrupt stop in the 48th minutes after center referee, Shekita awarded a penalty to host, Wilberforce.

The center referee reportedly said he was attacked by a City fan shortly after he awarded the penalty. This, he said, has left him in fear to continue officiating the match.

The referee and the other officials were escorted by security into the dugout.

The City Boys, who were fighting relegation in the ongoing Leone Rock Premier League, needed at least a point for survival giving that their rivals, Real Republicans lost by 4-1 to Ports Authority on the same day.

Freetown City were leading at the Academy 1-0 when the penalty was awarded to Wilberforce.

The public await the decision of the Sierra Leone Premier League Board to decide the fate of the two teams.
